Era 4 Engines
Researching just the solid lines on engines will get you to the next engine quicker. Unless otherwise noted or required, I don't recommend researching all engine upgrades.
- APOLLO: If you don't have Era 3 Coupling and you need an Era 4 engine quickly the APOLLO is one of two starting engines for the Era 4 Tech Tree. Although it does have 6 cars (8 with 2 upgrades), it has slow Speed (only 90 km with 2 upgrades) and low Acceleration (2/20 with an upgrade). I would not recommend the APOLLO.
- ARES: With 4 cars (5 with an upgrade) and a base Speed of 125 km, if you don't have Era 3 Coupling this is a good first Era 4 engine option. The quickest way to the THOR and the POSEIDON is by researching the ARES to the HORUS path.
- HORUS: While it has 7 cars with 2 upgrades, and high Acceleration, the HORUS has a Speed of only 105 km (with an upgrade). This is slow for an Era 4 engine. Not recommended.
- NEPTUNE: With 7 cars (8 with an upgrade), and a base Speed of 220 km, the NEPTUNE is another option if you don't have Era 3 Coupling. The NEPTUNE does have very low Acceleration (2/20 with an upgrade) though.
- THOR: The THOR is the best single slot engine of Era 4. If you don't have Era 3 Coupling you will likely be buying some THORs to replace your other Era 4 engines. With all 3 required upgrades, the THOR has 6 cars, a Speed of 190 km, and an Acceleration of 7/20.
- POSEIDON: The multi-slot engine of Era 4. With 2 upgrades each, the POSEIDON can haul 19 cars, has a Speed of 170 km, and an Acceleration of 10/20. Some players wonder if 3 THORs are better than a POSEIDON because of the THOR's speed. But the POSEIDON can out haul 3 THORs (19 to 18) and has a higher max Reliability rating (80% to 60%). Plus, the added time and hassle managing those extra engines is not worth it, in my opinion. Fully researching the POSEIDON is required before you can research Era 4 Coupling.
Coupling enables you to haul the next Era's goods too.
