Era 2 Engines
Researching just the solid lines on engines will get you to the next engine quicker. Unless otherwise noted or required, I don't recommend researching all engine upgrades.
- BAT: If you don't have Era 1 Coupling and you need an Era 2 engine quickly, the BAT is the first Era 2 engine. The base Speed is 150 km, but the Acceleration is very low 1/20 (2/20 with an upgrade). The BAT can haul 4 cars with the traction upgrade. Fully researching the BAT is not recommended as this slows your progress of getting to better engines. I recommend researching the BLACK BEAR path over the PANTHER path.
- BLACK BEAR: The BLACK BEAR has 4 cars, a base Speed of 70 km (90 km with an upgrade), and base acceleration of 15/20 (19/20 with an upgrade). Base Reliability 40% (65% with 2 upgrades) is low. The Black Bear is a better option for those without Era 1 Coupling than the BAT. It takes 35 Reseach Points to fully upgrade the BLACK BEAR.
- LYNX: The LYNX has only 1 car but can have 3 cars with 2 upgrades. The LYNX has a base Speed of 155 km (170 km with an upgrade), and base acceleration of 10/20 (15/20 with an upgrade). Base Reliability is 50% (65% with an upgrade). The LYNX has one less car but is much faster then the BLACK BEAR. So while the difference in this Tech Tree isn't big, I still think the best all around engine in Era 2 is the LYNX. I recommend fully researching it if you are going to replace your MOLES, BATS, or BLACK BEARS with LYNXs. It takes 57 Reseach Points to fully upgrade the LYNX.
- ELEPHANT: The ELEPHANT can be better than the LYNX when you have higher wait times. But it will take a while to fully research it, which is required to research Era 2 Coupling. The ELEPHANT has slow base Speed of 50 km (65 km with 2 upgrades), low base Acceleration of 1/20 (2/20 with an upgrade) and Reliability is low at 30% (40% with an upgrade). But it does have 7 cars with 2 upgrades. Sometimes I replace some LYNXs with ELEPHANTs and sometimes I don't. It depends on the amount of money I have torward the end of Era 2 or if we get a decrease engine cost worker at the right time.
- The other 2 engines are not often used or recommended.
Coupling enables you to haul the next Era's goods too.
